INERATEC, ENAP and Ferrostaal boost production of synthetic fuels

The National Petroleum Company (ENAP) will study the production of synthetic fuels in its refineries. Therefore, ENAP has signed a memorandum of understanding with the companies Ferrostaal Chile and INERATEC, which will carry out feasibility studies. 

The report, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024, will study alternatives for the production of this type of fuel, evaluating in a first phase the construction of a 10-MW e-Fuel plant with an annual production capacity of 3,500 tons at the company's sites. 

If built, this plant would be the largest of its kind in Chile and could thus become a scalable model for the future. At the same time, it would be a step for ENAP to advance the production of synthetic fuels and further expand its product portfolio. 

This type of technological development is in line with the state-owned company's strategy to enter the production of new fuels and contribute to the country's energy transition, as synthetic fuels do not require crude oil in their production phase and also emit 90% less particulate matter compared to conventional fuels.

"Today we are taking the first step to understand how we can incorporate these new, more environmentally friendly fuels into our refinery production. Together with our current partnerships to develop infrastructure for H₂V production in the Magallanes region, this is part of our ENAP 2040 strategy and opportunity to support the country's energy transition,"

said ENAP CEO Julio Friedmann. Ludwig Hecker, CEO of Ferrostaal Chile, reiterated the value of this new partnership, stating that "building on our collaboration with INERATEC, our new relationship with ENAP strengthens our joint determination to position Chile as a global beacon in the e-fuels sector," he added. 

Philipp Engelkamp, co-founder and CEO of INERATEC, said,

"The opportunities presented by Chile's renewable resources, combined with our innovative e-Fuel technology and our collaboration with key players such as Ferrostaal Chile and ENAP, will undoubtedly position e-Fuels as an important component in Chile's energy landscape." 

This trilateral collaboration aims to harness Chile's abundant renewable energy resources by exploring the feasibility of producing a sustainable and competitive alternative to fossil fuels. With each organization bringing its unique expertise to the table, the future looks "green" for Chile in setting global standards for the expansion of renewable energy generation, CO₂ recycling, and ultimately the sustainable production of e-fuels.
