Project Launch CARE-O-SENE

Launch of German-South African CARE-O-SENE research project to fuel the decarbonization of the aviation sector

INERATEC joins forces with global Power-to-Liquid frontrunners

Karlsruhe, Germany, 25th May 2022 - INERATEC with a proven track record in the application of world class catalysts in advanced Power-to-Liquid (PtL) plants joins forces with international frontrunners of energy and advanced catalyst research to develop next-generation catalysts which will accelerate the production of sustainable kerosene.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the launch of CARE-O-SENE (Catalyst Research for Sustainable Kerosene) research project during the Chancellor’s official visit to South Africa.

The German-South African consortium will develop catalysts with fewer metal usage, higher activity, and longer lifetime, which promise economic and environmental benefits. These optimized catalysts, which are needed to produce synthetic kerosene, will play a vital role in decarbonizing aviation with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The goal of INERATEC and its project partners is to sustainably transform the aviation sector by scaling the production and commercialization of sustainable kerosene.

INERATEC has extensive experience in building modular Power-to-Liquid plants that convert hydrogen from renewable energy and CO2 into synthetic fuels, such as sustainable kerosene, via the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process. Synthetic kerosene is highly demanded by the aviation industry striving to become more sustainable. In the CARE-O-SENE project, INERATEC will benchmark the novel FT-catalysts in their innovative PtL plants and investigate their compatibility with the company’s cutting-edge technology.

“We at INERATEC are very pleased to see established and innovative Clean tech companies joining forces. We have been in a long-standing technology partnership with Sasol and are now looking forward to the implementation of those next-generation catalysts in our Power-to-Liquid technology, optimizing SAF production.”

CEO and co-founder Tim Boeltken

The overall goal of the project complements the “Hydrogen Strategy” of the German government. The project will have significant benefits for strategic partnerships between German and South African companies and research institutes.

The solid technical program, coupled with strong capabilities of each project partner, will successfully accelerate the application of advanced FT-catalysts in PtL technologies.

By bundling the expertise of global industrial and academic leaders in the field of catalysis, CARE-O-SENE will successfully accelerate the application of advanced FT-catalysts in PtL technologies, optimizing SAF production. The international consortium consists of INERATEC, Sasol, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), KIT, Fraunhofer IKTS and the University of Cape Town (UCT) and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

About

INERATEC GmbH

INERATEC is a pioneer in the field of Power-to-Liquid applications. The company supplies sustainable fuels as well as chemical products. Modular chemical plants for power-to-X and gas-to-liquid applications use hydrogen from renewable electricity and greenhouse gases such as CO2 to produce e-kerosene, CO2-neutral gasoline, clean diesel or synthetic waxes, methanol or SNG. Founded in 2016, INERATEC has already implemented industrial-scale power-to-liquid plants at German sites to boost the availability of sustainable fuels and chemicals in various transport sectors such as aviation.
