INERATEC, the Karlsruhe-based pioneer in sustainable e-Fuels, has reached a key regulatory milestone: its PtL plant ERA ONE has received the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) EU certification under the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED III). This makes ERA ONE the first Power-to-Liquid plant in  the world whose synthetic fuels are fully recognized as RFNBO.
With ISCC EU certification, the synthetic fuels produced at ERA ONE can be counted towards binding RFNBO sub-targets in transport, aviation, and industry. The certification is therefore an important signal not only for INERATEC, but for the broader e-Fuels industry.

Tim Böltken, CEO and Co-Founder of INERATEC: “This milestone shows that regulation, certification, and industrial production are finally starting to come together. With ISCC EU certification, the e-Fuels from ERA ONE are not only technically ready but also fully recognized in the market – exactly what is needed to make synthetic fuels a real industry in Europe.”

At least 70% fewer GHG emissions compared to fossil fuels

ERA ONE, Europe’s largest commercial power-to-liquid facility located at Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst, Germany, produces up to 2,500 tons of e-Fuels per year. With its inauguration in 2025, INERATEC completed its transformation from plant manufacturer to fuel producer.

ISCC EU is one of the EU-recognized voluntary certification schemes for RFNBOs. The certification of ERA ONE confirms that the e-Fuels produced at the plant derive entirely from renewable, non-biological sources and achieve a greenhouse gas reduction of at least 70 percent compared to fossil fuels across their entire lifecycle. It also provides an audited chain of custody, giving customers, off-takers, and regulators assurance beyond voluntary claims.

Ready for Europe’s first RFNBO mandates

The certification comes at a decisive moment for the market. Under EU RED III, the first binding RFNBO sub-targets are now phasing in across the transport, aviation, and industry sectors, creating concrete demand for synthetic fuels whose renewable origin can be verified. By securing ISCC EU certification now, INERATEC ensures that e-Fuels from ERA ONE can be counted towards these obligations from the moment they apply. For airlines, shipping companies, and industrial off-takers, this reduces regulatory risk and supports long-term planning and off-take agreements. The practical relevance of certified e-Fuels was already demonstrated in June 2026, when fuel produced at ERA ONE was used on a passenger flight from Amsterdam to Hamburg via existing infrastructure, confirming that certified e-Fuels are ready for real-world operations.

Extending the certified value chain: ERA ONE upgrading units

For early 2027, INERATEC is planning the installation and ISCC EU certification of its own upgrading units at ERA ONE. These units will extend the certified value chain and increase the share of finished, market-ready fuels produced on site.
With ERA ONE and its upcoming upgrading capacity, INERATEC continues to bring regulation, certification, and industrial production together – laying the groundwork for the broader market ramp-up of synthetic fuels in Europe.
