Certification for Sustainable and Traceable Fuels
ISCC Certification
What is ISCC?
ISCC stands for “International Sustainability and Carbon Certification.” The system verifies whether products meet defined sustainability criteria throughout their entire value chain. This includes the origin of raw materials, greenhouse gas savings, and the complete traceability of product flows—known as the chain of custody.
ISCC EU and the Renewable Energy Directive
ISCC EU is the version designed for the European market. It is recognized by the EU and confirms compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED III). Synthetic fuels can thus be recognized as RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin). Only then can they be counted toward mandatory RFNBO quotas in the transportation, aviation, and industrial sectors.
Why is ISCC important for e-fuels?
Certification makes sustainability verifiable. Customers and regulatory authorities can be confident that an e-fuel meets legal requirements, both in the regulated and voluntary markets. For RFNBO fuels, this requires a greenhouse gas reduction of at least 70 percent over the entire life cycle. ISCC is thus a key component in enabling synthetic fuels to contribute to the decarbonization of industry and transportation.
